Damn. Damn.aaWell, I suppose he lived to be near 90. Better than I'm likely to do. But shit.aaMy sense of humor owes a lot to Lafferty. Or maybe it's just very similar. An Irish thing?aa"Seven Day Terror," among other stories, changed my life. He'll be missed.

It's funny, I never really "got" his work, but he was a nice man and I liked him. It's been a long time since I last spoke to him, or indeed even saw him. I think it must have been at the 1980 Worldcon; I was waiting for someone in the lobby and he came by, we said hello, and he wandered away again. A little while later someone came by and said, "Have you seen a little old man with half a glass of wine in his hand and the other half on his shirt?" "Ray Lafferty? Yeah, he was just by a little while ago." He always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye.
