    He was for many years and in many genealogical works given as a son of Thomas Southworth (1548-1616) and his wife Rosamond Lister. Were this so he would have been a proven descendant of Edward I, but no actual evidence exists that this was the case.

    "William Collier [...] came to Plymouth in 1633 as one of the few London-based Merchant Adventurers, a colony investment group, to settle in New England. He was often elected as an Assistant Governor in the thirty-some years between 1634/5 and 1665. He was on the side of the government leaders in the historic 1645 dispute with liberal religious leader William Vassall. During his long life involved in public service, he served on the Council of War and served at times as a commissioner of the United Colonies, a New England colonies military alliance primarily for defense against Indian attack."     In 1975, the distinguished genealogist John Insley Coddington argued that Jane Clark have been a widow when she married William Collier, and that by her prior Clark husband she had a daughter who married a Walker.

    He was hired at the port of Southampton, but despite the strenuous efforts of many researchers over many years, absolutely nothing has been proved about his English origins.
