Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Lucinda Hayden was born in 1817 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky (daughter of Lewis Hayden and Mary "Polly" Dant); died on 30 Mar 1845 in Fredericktown, Washington, Kentucky.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Lewis Hayden was born on 20 Aug 1796 in Washington, Kentucky (son of Basil Hayden and Henrietta Cole); died in 1849 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky; was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Donnelly (citation details below) gives the marriage of Lewis Hayden to Mary Dant as 13 Feb 1816, but she also shows their sons James Madison Hayden and Sylvester Hayden as born "abt 1811" and 1813, respectively.

Phyllis Brown's CD of Washington County marriages 1792-1892 (citation details below) gives the date as 13 Feb 1810. This would mean that, if Donnelly is correct about the year Lewis Hayden was born, he must have married at 14. But in fact it's plausible that Lewis Hayden was actually born as early as 1793 -- if he was actually born 20 Aug 1796, that would mean a four-year gap since the previous children of Basil Hayden and Henrietta Cole.

Lewis married Mary "Polly" Dant on 13 Feb 1810. Mary (daughter of Joseph Dant and Elizabeth Belinder Shercliffe) was born in 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky; died on 10 May 1879 in Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky; was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bardstown, Nelson, Kentucky. [Group Sheet]

  1. 4.  Basil HaydenBasil Hayden was born on 2 Jan 1744 in St. Andrew's Parish, St. Mary's County, Maryland (son of George Hayden and Charity); died between 21 Jun 1804 and 6 Aug 1804; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Holy Cross, Marion, Kentucky.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate death: 15 Jun 1804, Washington, Kentucky

    Notes:

After his father died when he was ten, he was raised by his mother and her second husband, William Morgan.

On a "Catholic Pioneers" roadside historical marker placed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

"Basil Hayden, Sr., led 25 Maryland Catholic families to settle near here, on Pottinger's Creek, 1785. Father Whelan said first Mass in Ky. here in 1787. First Catholic church west of Alleghenies built here in 1792. First monks, 1805, Trappist Fathers (Cistercians). Present church erected in 1823, under direction of famous Belgian missionary, Charles Nerinckx."

The marker is on N. St. Francis Road (highway 527) just south of Holy Cross Road (highway 457), next to Holy Cross Cemetery, about five miles west-northwest of the Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto.

It would probably surprise many people in, oh, say, Santa Fe, New Mexico, whose first Catholic church was built in 1626, to hear that the "first Catholic church west of Alleghenies" was built in 1792. The assumption being, of course, that the real history of the United States is that of white English-speakers gradually moving east to west. This is the very definition of how marginalization works.

Basil married Henrietta Cole before 1771 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Henrietta (daughter of Robert Cole and Ann Greenwell) was born on 2 Jul 1754 in St. Mary's, St. Mary's, Maryland; died on 6 Dec 1837 in Marion County, Kentucky; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Holy Cross, Marion, Kentucky. Notes:

See the notes for her son William Leo Hayden for the story of William Leo's birth and of Henrietta Cole's complicated relationship with Charles Ewing.

He makes his son, John Dant, his executor. This will was witnessed by: William Smock, Jefferson C. Peak, and William Peterson. This was the terrible year of the Asiatic Cholera Epedemic and I suspect it was the cause of his demise. His will can be found in the Washington County, KY Clerk's Office in Springfield, KY in Will Book 'E', page 200." [Find a Grave page for Joseph Dant, citation details below]
