Generation: 1

  1. 1.  John Wheeler was born before 4 Nov 1591 (son of Dominick Wheeler and Mercy Jelly); died between 28 Mar 1668 and 11 Oct 1670 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1589, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
    • Baptised: 4 Nov 1591, St. Edmund's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
    • Alternate death: 29 Aug 1670, Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts

    Notes:

He was a shearman and a barber. He belonged to the notably Puritanical church of St. Edmund's, Salisbury, over which Peter Thatcher was minister for many years.

He was long thought to have come over with his family on the Mary and John (passenger list dated 24 Mar 1634), which seemed reasonable given that most of the emigrants on that ship inititially settled, like John Wheeler, in Newbury. But Walter Goodwin Davis pointed out that his youngest son Henry is recorded as having been baptised at St. Edmund's, Salisbury, 8 Feb 1635. And as his father's executor in 1678, Henry gave his age as 43, again placing his birth in 1635. So it's far likelier that the John Wheeler on the Mary and John passenger list was someone else of the same name.

John married Agnes Yeomans on 1 Dec 1611 in St. Edmund's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Agnes died on 15 Aug 1662 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Henry Wheeler was born before 8 Feb 1635; died before 1696.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Dominick Wheeler was born about 1565; died on 12 Jan 1616 in St. Edmund's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.

    Other Events:

    • Alternate death: Between 12 Dec 1615 and 16 Feb 1616, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

    Notes:

    He was a shearman.

Dominick married Mercy Jelly on 3 Jun 1588 in St. Edmund's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Mercy died after Dec 1615. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mercy Jelly died after Dec 1615.

    Notes:

A very strange surname. We note that "Jolly" is a not-uncommon Cornish surname, however.

    Children:
    1. 1. John Wheeler was born before 4 Nov 1591; died between 28 Mar 1668 and 11 Oct 1670 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.
