• Notes

  The 1851 census says she was born in Southampton, Hampshire. The 1841 and 1861 censuses say she was born in St. Ives. An Amelia Phillips, with two Ls, was baptised 31 May 1801 at St. Peter & St. Paul, Fareham, Hampshire, daughter of John and Susanna Phillips. Fareham is about fifteen miles east-southeast of Southampton. The marriage of a John Phillips to a Susanna Davis is recorded on 28 Jul 1799 in Ringwood, Hampshire, about twenty miles west-southwest of Southampton. The 1841 census records a Susan Phillip, age 55 and thus born 1786, living at St. Ives in a household that also includes Susan Chapman, 25, and George Chapman, 1. England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991, on ancestry.com, reports the burial of a Susanna Phillips at St. Ives on 12 Jan 1849. The 1851 census records a John Phillips, age 81 and thus born 1770, living at St. Ives in a household that also includes Susan Chapman, 33, and George Chapman, 12.
