  We know his middle name from the 1860 census, where it is abbreviated "Jas." According to the 1910 census, his father was born in Denmark and his mother was born in France. The 1910 census also calls him proprietor of a "music ware store". From the evidence of the elegant cartoon sketch attached to this entry, he must have later become a clothing merchant.
