• Notes

  Author of, among many other works, The Pilgrim's Progress. First cousin ten times removed to Laura (Wightman) Hayden, PNH's sister-in-law. John Bunyan wrote in Grace Abounding that his own descent was "as is well known by many, of a low and inconsiderable generation; my father’s house being of that rank that is meanest, and most despised of all the families in the land." But his great-great grandfather Thomas Bonyan, born 1502 -- grandfather of John Bunyan's grandfather Thomas Bonyan who died in 1641 -- in 1544 held part of the manor of Elstow from Henry VIII.
