• Notes

  According to Burke, quoted in the nineteenth-century DNB, he was a son of de Montfort supporter Adam de Gurdon, who, after Evesham, is supposed to have fought the future Edward I in single combat, and, although defeated, so impressed the prince that his life was spared and he went on to live several more decades as a soldier and forester. More recent scholarship tends to cast doubt on this.
