From the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (citation details below):
There seems to be no contemporary evidence to support the later tradition that made him the son of one John Howard and his wife, Lucy Germund. [...]
Howard was twice married. His first wife, Alice, is said to have been the daughter of Robert of Ufford. His second wife, also named Alice, is said to have been the daughter of John Fitton of Wiggenhall and had previously been married to Simon Constable of Burton Constable in Yorkshire, who had died in prison in 1294 while refusing to plead on a number of criminal charges, including that of poisoning his first wife. Alice was successful in obtaining her dower from Constable's lands, although there was also a rival second wife, Katherine of Weelsby. Howard seems to have married Alice between 1297 and 1300, by which date he had been knighted. His son and heir, John, was almost certainly a child of his first marriage, and this may also have been the case with his second son, William.
