  According to "vanboerum2", he died at sea, and was at one time acting commander of the U.S.S. Constitution. This appears to be born out by his epitaph in Green-Wood Cemetery: IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILLIAM BOERUM COMMANDER U. S. NAVY. BORN AUGUST 12, 1796. LOST IN THE MOZAMBIQUE CHANNEL COAST OF AFRICA WHILST IN COMMAND OF THE U. S. S. CONCORD. NOVEMBER 2, 1842. AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF EMILY, WIFE OF WILLIAM BOERUM, COMMANDER U. S.
