  • Notes
    • One of DDB's four "gateway ancestors." He emigrated from Exeter to New England in 1636 or 1637 with his wife and children, settling first in Dorchester and then in New Haven. By April 1644, but possibly as early as February 1641, he was back in Exeter. It is not known that he ever returned to New England, but his children remained there and his American descendants are numerous. For instance:

      Thomas Trowbridge (~1600-1673) = Elizabeth Marshall (b. 1602)
      James Trowbridge (1636-1717) = Margaret Jackson (d. 1727)
      Thomas Trowbridge (b. 1677)
      John Trowbridge (1701-1772) = Mehetabel Eaton (d. 1777)
      Mary Trowbridge (b. 1728) = Amos Gates (1714-1800)
      Ruth Gates (1768-1854) = Ebenezer Hemenway (d. 1839)
      Luther Hemenway (1787-1872) = Betsy Cummings (1785-1850)
      Sarah Hemenway (b. 1818) = Warren C. Towne
Sophronia Augusta Towne (1845-1908) = Henry Harrison Hartwell (b. 1850)
Bert Arthur Hartwell (1875-1932) = Mabel Rebecca Geddes (1881-1958)
Henry Geddes Hartwell (1907-1998) = Constance Elizabeth Nash (1913-2005)
David Geddes Hartwell (1941-2016), eminent SF & fantasy editor
