• Notes

  Or Skeff, Skeffe, etc. First appears in New England at Lynn about 1635; said to have come from London. Like his son James Skiffe Jr., he was an original proprietor of West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard, but he never lived there. It is said that he was tolerant of Quakers, and that for this he was at one point refused a seat at the Massachusetts General Court. Charles Edwards Banks (citation details below) says nothing of this, but says that he was a representative for Sandwich to the court for thirteen years beginning in 1645.
