  • Notes
    • His name was also spelled De Voose, De Voorse. Said to have, in his boyhood and with his family, fled from France to Mannheim, Germany to escape French persecution of Huguenots. Emigrated from Mannheim to New Amsterdam in 1675.

His French origins are variously given as the "province of Annis" and "near Rochelle". Church records from Mannheim list him as a native of Festubert, in Pas-de-Calais, which is certainly a lot closer to Mannheim. But it is entirely imaginable that his family gave a false account of their place of origin, given the continuing French attempts to find and persecute Huguenot emigrants.
