  His grandfather William Homes wrote in his diary: "My Grand Son William Homes was born on Jany 10 1716/17 at 2 afternoon. He was baptized in the old north church by Dr Increase Mather the 13th day of the same month." He was a gold and silver smith. Described (by an unattributed source quoted in Lineage of the Bowens of Woodstock, Connecticut, citation details below, as "a man of tender conscience, good-tempered, and inclined to jocoseness," "thin, [with] large joints, [and] round-shouldered," and was "thought to bear a striking resemblance to his uncle, Benjamin Franklin." Also according to Lineage of the Bowens of Woodstock, Connecticut, he was born in the same house where his famous uncle is said to have been born.
