According to legend (which may be true in part, or in all), he was the first man to kill a whale off the coast of Cape Cod, for which he was persecuted by people who believed he could only have accomplished such a thing with the aid of evil spirits, resulting in his subsequent emigration to Danbury, Connecticut.
