  • Notes
    • MP in the Long Parliament and Rump Parliament, Solicitor General, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Chief Justice of the King's Bench.

His relationship to the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War is extraordinarily complex and beyond the scope of this database.

He was probably born, like his sister Elizabeth, in Keysoe, Bedfordshire. Contrary to his Wikipedia article and his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was not a great-grandson of Oliver St. John, first Baron St. John of Bletso; they were instead first cousins twice removed, being both descended from John St. John (d. 1525) and his wife Sibyl ferch Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip.
