  Although many Sinclairs of Herdmanston occur in the record around the time of his birth, evidence is lacking for any of them being specifically his parents. "[K]nighted after 23 January 1343/4, taken prisoner by the English in 1346 at the battle of Neville's Cross and held in the custody of William Dacre and Warene de Scargehill."
