Notes - Often called by himself and others "Quartermaster John Smith", presumably to distinguish him from the several other John Smiths of early New England. He was a herdsman, a carpenter, and a maltster. He was literate; his inventory included "books &c.", and he signed the 1641[2?] agreement establishing a free school at Dorchester.
With his first wife Dorothy, he emigrated in 1635 on the James, along with the Rev. Richard Mather.
On 18 Feb 1655, "John Smith and his wife were excommunicated for committing fornication together before marriage which was found out by the birth of their child albeit they being questioned for it before the church did conceal their sin until God palpably charged it upon them by the means…" [Records of the First Church at Dorchester in New England, 1636-1734, Boston, 1891] They were restored to church membership on 22 Apr 1655.
