Notes - According to the online Catholic Encyclopedia entry on his son, St. Gilbert of Sempringham, this Gilbert Jocelyn was "a wealthy Norman knight holding lands in Lincolnshire" and his mother was "an Englishwoman of humble rank." Evidently Gilbert had the Lincolnshire livings of Sempringham and Tirington in his gift, since he bestowed them on his son.
