• Notes

  He was brother to Adam Hurd, but the two brothers' parentage is unknown. Adam had a son named John Hurd, who was called "junior" to distinguish him from his uncle -- "senior" and "junior" had not yet come to mean only father and son. Adam's son John Hurd himself had a son called John Hurd, adding to the latter-day confusion. This John Hurd's tombstone, in the Old Congregational Burying Ground in Stratford, Connecticut, can be seen at this Find a Grave page, which incorrectly calls him "John Hurd, III" and makes him the son of Adam Hurd.
