    • Also called Robert Malyn le Chaucer, "chaucer" meaning a maker of shoes or hose. He may have taken the name after the death of his employer, the mercer John le Chaucer. He is also recorded as Robert the Saddler.

      His family was engaged, over several generations, in the export of wool and the importation of wine through Ipswich, Suffolk. He was the first of his family to move to London.
