• Notes

  In 1652 he settled in Newtown, Long Island, then removed to Suffield, Connecticut. His first wife was Joanna Williams, whom he married in 1659. Said variously, and without proof, to have been a son of John Lawton of Lawton, Cheshire, born in 1582, and to have been a brother of George Lawton (1607-1693) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The latter's father was George Lawton of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, so both assertions cannot be true. The likelihood is that neither is.
