  • Notes
    • Gerald R. Fuller claims her as a daughter of Eleazar Hamlin and Lydia Sears, who are already ancestral to TNH via their son Benjamin. This runs up against the problem that H. Franklin Andrews's well-documented 1902 The Hamlin Genealogy lists, as the only children of Eleazar Hamlin and Lydia Sears, Benjamin (b. 1692), Lydia (b. 1694), Mary (b. 1696), and Elisha (b. 1698).

Fuller's argument consists of pointing out that after Eleazar Hamlin died in 1698, Lydia Sears married Thomas Snow in 1706 and they named their first child Lydia in 1707, which, Fuller claims, they wouldn't have done if Lydia Sears already had a daughter named Lydia by her first marriage, to which we reply, have you ever done any genealogy? Fuller continues: "Therefore the Hamlin Genealogy made a mistake in listing the first Lydia and it should have been Rebecca, who md. 11 May 1720 Judah Berry. The first Lydia never existed." To say that this is unconvincing is to understate the case. The History of Hardwick, Massachusetts and the Stephen Hopkins "silver book" both call Judah Berry's second wife Rebecca Hamlin, so we're keeping the surname, but we have found no evidence of her specific parentage.
