• Notes

  The 1850 census says that her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Virginia. The 1880 census says Pennsylvania and Maryland. The 1900 record for her daughters Hannah and Sarah (who were in the same household in San Jose) says their mother was born in Maryland. The 1910 census says Pennsylvania and Ohio. That her middle name was Ellen comes from the research notes of Patrick Foley, attributed to correspondence in 1997 with relative Ella Fahey, and is confirmed by her baptismal record, found by ASF. She appears to have frequently gone by the nickname Lide. From "Charles Henry Yagle" by Patrick Foley (citation details below): Eliza Yagle apparently remained on the ranch for several years after her husband's death. In April 1898 she purchased a wagon, suggesting an intention to continue running the operation. She made payments on the mortgage note on the property, and in 1898 she refinanced the property with a provision for supplemental borrowings--a clause she used within a few months of the refinance. Thereafter she moved into town. For a time her sons Charles H. Yagle, Jr. and John ("Jack") Yagle lived with her. Later, two of her grandchildren--Mildred and John Foley--lived with her. After Mildred's marriage in 1915, Grandma Yagle, as she was then known, moved with John to Fresno for a while. They returned to San Jose by 1920 and continued to live together while John went through high school and college.
