  Also spelled Hascall F. Hartwell. "He was a resident of Rockingham, Vermont when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 1 March 1862 as a private in Company K, 4th Vermont Regiment. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the battle of White Oak Swamp,in Henrico County, Virginia, on 30 June 1862; this was part of the Seven Days Battles (Peninsula Campaign) of the American Civil War.
