• Notes

  She was a daughter of William Jackson (1783-1855), congressman from Massachusetts's 9th district 1833-1837, a supporter of pro-temperance, anti-Masonic, and anti-slavery causes. Her uncle, her father's brother, was the eminent abolitionist Francis Jackson (1789-1861). Her first marriage was to Thomas Aspinwall Davis (1798-1845), a silversmith and businessman who was elected mayor of Boston on the Native American Party line in 1845, serving for nine months and dying in office. Her Find a Grave page, cited below, mysteriously calls her "Sarah Jackson Jackson", and just as puzzlingly asserts that Lewis Tappan was her first husband and Thomas Aspinwall Davis her second. The actual dates on the page appear, however, to be correct.
