In the 1860 census he is 13, living with his father (the name as written looks like "Lachara"), age 40, a 40-year-old woman named Elizabeth (presumably his stepmother), brother Enoch, 18, brother Henry, 17, and brother William, 11, all in Moore County, North Carolina, post office Good Spring. His "cannot read" column is unchecked. In the 1870 census he is 22, living in Bensalem, Moore County, North Carolina with wife Lydia, 21, son Henry, 3, daughter Margaret, 5 months, and Elizabeth Pool, age 70. His "cannot read" and "cannot write" columns are unchecked. In the 1880 census he is 33, living in Shuffield, Moore County, North Carolina with wife Lydia M, 34, daughter Margret, 10, son Henry F., 9, daughter Nancy C., 7, son John C, 4, and daughter Mary A., 1. His "cannot read" and "cannot write" columns are checked. In the 1900 census he is 53, living with wife Lydie M., 54, and son Ezkil R., 11, all in Township 4, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. The word "yes" appears in his "can read" and "can write" columns.
