  She was the widow of Walter Broadhurst (d. 1659) and, secondly, Henry Brett. Many sources assert that she was, like Col. John Washington's third wife Frances Gerard, a daughter of Thomas Gerard and Susannah Snow. John Walton's 1973 article "Genealogica Marylandia: Gerard's Daughters" (citation details below) shows pretty conclusively that this is chronologically impossible, even leaving aside the fact that the laws of Virginia at the time forbade that a man should marry his deceased wife's sister.
