  She was the widow of Samuel Bennett, with whom she arrived in Virginia on the Providence in 1622. She and Samuel were named in the census, 11 Feb 1624, as living at Elizabeth City with two children, named as gender unspecified. Both children had died by 7 Feb 1625 when she and her husband were listed in the muster of Elizabeth City, he aged 40, both of them servants of John Tiler. Samuel Bennett died before 6 May 1636 when Joan, "widdow", received a patent for 450 acres in Charles County.
