Notes - She was an older sister of Lucy (Shipley) Hanks, wife of James Hanks. Lucy and James have been hypothesized as the parents of Abraham Lincoln's mother Nancy Hanks, although recent DNA evidence appears to tend away from this theory. It is certainly true, however, that Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's parents, were married in 1806 at the Berry family home, by then the home of her son Richard Berry Jr.; and that, moreover, Richard Berry Jr. signed the marriage bond as "gardin" (i.e., guardian) to Nancy Hanks.
