  • Notes
    • "Doge Pietro designated his son Otto as his successor, and when Pietro died in 1008, Otto (sometimes known as Ottone) became, at sixteen, the youngest Doge in Venice's history. Otto turned out to be much like other members of his illustrious family, especially in his love of pomp and power, and he further advanced his dynastic ambitions by marrying a daughter of the Hungarian King Istvan. Doge Otto Orseolo wasted little time in his efforts to secure his family's position. Between 1017 and 1026 he engaged in a number of highly questionable activities, including the appointments of his brothers Orso and Vitale as Patriarch of Grado and Bishop of Torcello, respectively. These shenanigans worried the patricians of Venice, who engineered a coup d'etat in 1026 that sent Otto off into exile in Constantinople." [A Traveller's History of Venice, by Peter Mentzel. Interlink Books, 2006.]

[Note: Otto's wife was a daughter of Géza of Hungary, not of Géza's son Stephen I (in Hungarian, Istvan). The confusion may have arisen because Géza's baptismal name was also Stephen/Istvan.]
