• Notes

  According to D. Pitard, "She was married at age 17; the Justice of the Peace signed a consent for her to marry JH DeGrange; the guardian's/notary's name is Drosain Matrijean. [This is the husband of her half-sister Julia Fields.] On her marriage certificate, she is named the daughter of 'John McMilland & Mary.'" Her listing on the DeGrange family tomb at Metairie says she was born in 1843. The record of her father John McMillan's death, filed 25 Mar 1850, says he died 23 Jun 1842, but he could still be her father if she was born in the first three months of 1843. However, since the record of her 10 Dec 1859 marriage says she was 17 and thus needed permission to marry, it seems likelier that she was born in 1842 and that the plaque on the DeGrange tomb is in error. The 1880 US census says her father was born in New Jersey and her mother was born in France.
