    • In 2012, Simon Neal (citation details below) made a strong albeit circumstantial case that she was Mary Kent alias Back, born about 1580 in Ratlake to Robert Kent of Ratlake and Joan Machill, the latter a daughter of Robert Machill; that Robert died before 1590; that after Mary married Stephen Hopkins, they and her mother Joan ran a small alehouse; and that Joan died in 1611.
