Notes - As Laura K. Pettingell documented in 1967 (citation details below), Thomas Fowler was not a son of emigrant Philip Fowler as shown in many sources, but rather his nephew. On 30 Sep 1656, John Coggswell Sr. and Phillip Fowler consented to an assignment by John of servant Thomas Fowler, "to his uncle Phillip Fowler."
Depositions show that in his boyhood he lived in Marlborough, Wiltshire. In 1662 he testified that he was then about 26, and in 1676 he was described as "aged abourt forty years." Additionally, on 16 Apr 1659, Ann Sawars testified that this Thomas Fowler was countryman to Anthony Morse (1607-1686, also an ancestor of TNH), who married Ann Cox at St. Mary the Virgin in Marlborough, Wiltshire on 2 May 1629 and who arrived in New England in 1635 on the James, settling at Newbury. All of these combine to make it very probable that he was the Thomas Fowler baptized in Marlborough on 9 Aug 1636.
