    Notes
    • The report of the marriage of Jennie Rose Elder to Escar A. Smith in the 19 Sep 1920 issue of the Messenger-Inquirer does not confirm that this is the Jennie Rose Elder who was a daughter of William Walter Elder and Anna Justine Newton. However, the 8 Feb 1936 Messenger obituary for Anna Justine Newton lists, among children that survive her, "Generose Smith, Mount Carmel, Ill." And the 28 Aug 1941 Messenger obituary for her sister Lena Evelyn (Elder) Key mentions her among the five surviving sisters.

  • Notes
    • His obituary in the Vincennes Sun-Commercial (citation details below) says that he was a retired watchmaker and a veteran of World War I. It says that he is survived by, among others, "the wife, Mary Smith" and "a son, Farnum Smith of New York." It doesn't mention his marriage to Jennie Rose (or Generose) Elder, but the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007, on ancestry.com shows a James Farnum Smtih, born in Owensboro 11 Jul 1921, died 9 Apr 2005, son of Escar A. Smith and Jennie R. Elder.

His headstone records his service in World War I:

      KENTUCKY
CPL CO B 13 MG BN
      WORLD WAR I
