    • Knight of the shire for Yorkshire, Jan 1365; later summoned to the upper house as a baron by writ in 1371, where he was made Lord High Treasurer and Keeper of the Seal. He was Lord Chancellor from 1378 to 1380 and again from 1380 to 1382.

Fought at Crécy and at Neville's Cross, where he was knighted on the field; also at the siege of Calais, the sea-fight off Winchilsea, at the recapture of Berwick, and at the 1359-60 siege of Paris. He was in the retinue of John of Gaunt's Spanish campaign and present at the battle of Najera. He was also in Gaunt's retinue in Scotland and present at the taking of Edinburgh.

Winner in the celebrated Scrope vs. Grosvenor heraldic dispute, prevailing over TNH, JTS, TSW, and TWK ancestor Robert Grosvenor. Among those testifying on Scrope's behalf was Geoffrey Chaucer.
