    • He was an Overseer of the "first planters" party of the Dorchester Company that landed in 1624 at Cape Ann, to form a colony at what is now Gloucester. By virtue of having been in authority at this first settlement of what later became the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he is considered by some to have been the first governor of Massachusetts.
