  • Notes
    • He was a shearman and a barber. He belonged to the notably Puritanical church of St. Edmund's, Salisbury, over which Peter Thatcher was minister for many years.

He was long thought to have come over with his family on the Mary and John (passenger list dated 24 Mar 1634), which seemed reasonable given that most of the emigrants on that ship inititially settled, like John Wheeler, in Newbury. But Walter Goodwin Davis pointed out that his youngest son Henry is recorded as having been baptised at St. Edmund's, Salisbury, 8 Feb 1635. And as his father's executor in 1678, Henry gave his age as 43, again placing his birth in 1635. So it's far likelier that the John Wheeler on the Mary and John passenger list was someone else of the same name.
