Note that according to William Faulkner and Southern History by Joel Williamson (Oxford University Press, 1993), Faulkner's Charles Word ancestor was born in Landaff, Glamorganshire, Wales. Two things about this, though.

First, Williamson's citation for this is an item in the Ripley Public Library, Ripley, Mississippi, called "A Genealogy of the Word Family Written by James Word, December 23, 1882," which was provided to the Ripley library on an unknown date by one Eleanor MacDonald of Farmington, New Mexico. The Ripley library "has collected a vast amount of highly valuable relating to Ripley and Tippah County, the original seat of the Falkners in Mississipi." This does not suggest that Williamson's source represents the latest scholarship.

Second, most online Word genealogies appear to agree that the original Word immigrant came from Llandaff, but they push that immigrant back a couple more generations to a John Word supposedly born in Llandaff around 1650. A subset of these trees claim that the Words were originally from Scotland and merely sailed from Llandaff.

It does appear, at any rate, that there was indeed a Charles Word in Virginia, who died about 1792; who was married to a woman named Sarah; whose son Charles died in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780; who had another son named Cuthbert who died in 1781 as a prisoner of the British on board the ship New Jersey; and who had a son named John who married Fannie Collins. We tentatively take this person to be both Patrick's ancestor and Faulkner's, wherever he was born.

Further note: Joseph Gaston Baillie Bulloch's 1901 A History and Genealogy of the Habersham Family (citation details below) also states that this Charles Word "came from Llandaff, Glamorganshire, Wales."

Soldier, Continental Army (Virginia), American Revolution. He fought in the 1780 Battle of King's Mountain and survived, unlike his brother Charles Jr. (b. 1740) who was killed.

For his birth, this site cites Chamberlayne, C. G., The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Countes, Virginia, 1684-1786 (The Library Board, Richmond, 1932).

This site says his will "was made on May 25, 1821 and apparently probated August 1821." Named in it was "Sarah (married William McHaney)".

John married Frances "Fanny" Collins on 9 Nov 1799 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. Frances (daughter of William Collins and Mary) was born on 22 Oct 1758 in New Kent County, Virginia; died on 1 Aug 1821 in Wilson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Her grave says that she died on 22 Feb 1881, age 84 years, 5 months, and 27 days, which yields a birthdate of 22 Sep 1796. This is over three years before the 1799 marriage date for her parents given in two different ancestry.com-hosted indices of Virginia marriages.

Sarah married William Wilshire McHaney on 23 Mar 1812 in Lebanon, Wilson, Tennessee. William (son of Andrew McHaney and Mary Dillon) was born on 23 Mar 1790 in Pittsylvania, Virginia; died on 18 Sep 1851 in Marion, Illinois; was buried in Fredonia Cemetery, Odin, Marion, Illinois. The Goodspeed History of Tennessee gives her and C. C. Butler's marriage date as 8 Dec 1836, in Wilson County, Tennessee.

Notes:

Social Security records give her birthdate as 11 Mar 1886. But a Tennessee "Delayed Certificate of Birth" for Katherine Jacobs (citation details below), dated 13 Mar 1952, signed by her (as "Katherine Workman") on 4 Feb 1952, says she was born 11 Mar 1887. This document is notable to us as the only evidence confirming that her birth name was Katherine, rather than Catherine (as shown on her daughter Mildred's marriage license) or Kate (as shown on most other records). The document cites as evidence an "Orig. Family Bible" described as "Very Old"; a "Cert. Copy Record of Birth" for her daughter Neville Workman, that copy having been made 15 Mar 1943; and affadavits dated 4 Feb 1952 from "Martha B. Workman, Cousin" and "Leona Palmer, Non-Relative", the latter described on the reverse of the document as "Next Door Neighbor When Catherine [sic] Was Born."

"FULTON, Ky., July 7 — Mrs. Kate Workman, former resident of Fulton and an aunt of Mrs. Mary Owens of Fulton, died Saturday morning in Detroit. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Hayden and Miss Neville Workman of Detroit, two grandchildren and several great-greandchildren. Funeral services and burial were held in Detroit today." Her father Monroe Marshall Jacobs died when she was about five years old. Then when she was nearly eight, her mother married Uriah Jasper Hammonds.

When she was sixteen, she herself married William Richard Workman, her stepfather's nephew, twelve years older than her. (William's mother Narcissa was Uriah Hammonds's sister.)

Sometime in the late 1920s, when she was about forty and her younger daughter Mildred was still in her teens, she bundled up both daughters and left for Michigan (legend says, in the middle of the night), never to see her husband again.

According to PNH's father, Neville stayed in occasional touch with her father, but Kate and Mildred had nothing further to do with him.

We've always wondered if she was pressured into marrying her stepfather's nephew while she was still in her teens, and if the marriage ultimately worked out as well as such an arrangement might have been expected to. The abruptness of her departure does suggest some kind of sudden and unpleasant discovery or event. (Alternately, her mother's death in 1926 might have been what finally set events in motion.)

One of the witnesses to the record of William Workman posting marriage bond was a "J. T. Hammonds". Possibly William Workman's cousin James Thomas Hammonds (1863-1914), son of Younger Hammonds -- or possibly William's cousin Thomas James Hammonds (b. 1865), son of Kate's stepfather Uriah Jasper Hammonds by his previous wife Mary Elizabeth Bobbitt. At any rate, it does seem like Kate Jacobs spent a lot of her early life overwhelmingly surrounded by Hammondses.

Katherine married William Richmond Workman on 12 Nov 1903 in Gibson County, Tennessee. William (son of Jefferson Porter Workman and Narcissa Jeffers Hammonds) was born on 4 Oct 1875 in Fulton, Fulton, Kentucky; died on 1 Jul 1945 in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas; was buried on 3 Jul 1945 in Fairview Cemetery, Fulton, Fulton, Kentucky. She never married. Born slightly cross-eyed, she spent her life (mistakenly) convinced she was unattractive. She worked for the Post Office and was kind.

"6416 Helen was the apartment where my Grandmother Workman and Aunt Neville ('Sissy', 'Pea-Pa') lived in Detroit....where I spent many happy urban neighborhood hours away from Muddy Shoulders, [but] was in the path of the Edsel Ford Expressway so the entire area remains only in my dreams."
