    Notes:

    He is listed on the roll of Major John Baptist Ashe's Company of the 1st North Carolina Battalion, commanded by Colonel Thomas Clarke, dated 8 Sep 1778, as a private who enlisted on 16 Feb 1777. Elsewhere, he is shown as having enlisted 16 Feb 1777 and mustered out as a corporal on 19 May 1779. A "Benj. Jacobs" also appears as a private on the muster roll of Capt. John Belfield's Troop in the First Regiment Light Dragoons in the Service of the United States of America, Commanded by Col. Theodorick Bland, Taken for the Months of Oct. and Nov. [year not legible], said to have enlisted 15 July 78 for a term of three years. It seems plausible that the Benjamin Jacobs of this page corresponds to at least one of these records.

    He appears as head of family the 1790 census in Caswell, North Carolina, in the 1800 census in Hillsborough, Person County, North Carolina, and in the 1810 census in Person County, North Carolina. In 1794 he appears on the Person County tax list, St. Luke's district, with 100 acres; he also appears in the 1795 and 1805 Person County tax lists.

    He witnessed the wills of Nathaniel Norfleet, William Hargis, and Richard Hargis (son of William Hargis). His own will is dated 16 May 1815; sons Calbel and Elijah are named executors, and Nathaniel Norfleet and Stokes Allen are witnesses. His estate was settled in May 1817. According to an unsourced Find a Grave page which says that his burial details are unknown, he died in August 1815.

    Volume One of Wheeley's or Upper Hico Primitive Baptist Church Minutes from 1790 to 1846, covering the period when the church was simply called Wheeley's Church, mentions Benjamin and sons Caleb and Elijah.

    Notes:

    Volume One of Wheeley's or Upper Hico Primitive Baptist Church Minutes from 1790 to 1846, covering the period when the church was simply called Wheeley's Church, says that Caleb Jacobs was "Received by experience 2nd Saturday July 1802" and was baptised the next day, and later states that on the second Saturday of Oct 1817 he "applied for a letter of dismission which was granted". This would appear to mark the point at which he and his family left Person County, North Carolina for Robertson County, Tennessee. He bought 78 acres of land located on Red River in Robertson County from Chas. Brandon, 31 Oct 1822 and registered it 23 May 1823. On 25 Jan 1825 he bought 13 additional acres in Robertson County from the state of Tennessee. On 19 Nov 1832 his wife Mary sold the whole farm to John Ellison and signed the deed as "Mary Jacobs, widow." According to notes left by users on familysearch.org, Mary then removed to Gibson County, Tennessee to live with her daughter Lucinda and family; this would appear to be born out by the 1850 census of Gibson County which shows her, age 66, living with Lucinda and Lucinda's husband William McFarland.

    An unsourced Find a Grave page says that he died 5 Apr 1830 (plausible) and that his full name was Caleb Benjamin Jacobs (unlikely). No burial marker is portrayed.

    Caleb married Mary Scoggin on 3 Apr 1805 in Person County, North Carolina. Mary (daughter of Nathan Scoggin and Martha Johnston) was born on 8 Jul 1784 in Person County, North Carolina; died in 1865 in Carroll County, Tennessee; was buried in Hope Hill Cemetery, Medina, Gibson, Tennessee.     Notes:

    Social Security records give her birthdate as 11 Mar 1886. But a Tennessee "Delayed Certificate of Birth" for Katherine Jacobs (citation details below), dated 13 Mar 1952, signed by her (as "Katherine Workman") on 4 Feb 1952, says she was born 11 Mar 1887. This document is notable to us as the only evidence confirming that her birth name was Katherine, rather than Catherine (as shown on her daughter Mildred's marriage license) or Kate (as shown on most other records). The document cites as evidence an "Orig. Family Bible" described as "Very Old"; a "Cert. Copy Record of Birth" for her daughter Neville Workman, that copy having been made 15 Mar 1943; and affadavits dated 4 Feb 1952 from "Martha B. Workman, Cousin" and "Leona Palmer, Non-Relative", the latter described on the reverse of the document as "Next Door Neighbor When Catherine [sic] Was Born."

    "FULTON, Ky., July 7 — Mrs. Kate Workman, former resident of Fulton and an aunt of Mrs. Mary Owens of Fulton, died Saturday morning in Detroit. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Hayden and Miss Neville Workman of Detroit, two grandchildren and several great-greandchildren. Funeral services and burial were held in Detroit today."     Her father Monroe Marshall Jacobs died when she was about five years old. Then when she was nearly eight, her mother married Uriah Jasper Hammonds.

    When she was sixteen, she herself married William Richard Workman, her stepfather's nephew, twelve years older than her. (William's mother Narcissa was Uriah Hammonds's sister.)

    Sometime in the late 1920s, when she was about forty and her younger daughter Mildred was still in her teens, she bundled up both daughters and left for Michigan (legend says, in the middle of the night), never to see her husband again.

    According to PNH's father, Neville stayed in occasional touch with her father, but Kate and Mildred had nothing further to do with him.

    We've always wondered if she was pressured into marrying her stepfather's nephew while she was still in her teens, and if the marriage ultimately worked out as well as such an arrangement might have been expected to. The abruptness of her departure does suggest some kind of sudden and unpleasant discovery or event. (Alternately, her mother's death in 1926 might have been what finally set events in motion.)

    One of the witnesses to the record of William Workman posting marriage bond was a "J. T. Hammonds". Possibly William Workman's cousin James Thomas Hammonds (1863-1914), son of Younger Hammonds -- or possibly William's cousin Thomas James Hammonds (b. 1865), son of Kate's stepfather Uriah Jasper Hammonds by his previous wife Mary Elizabeth Bobbitt. At any rate, it does seem like Kate Jacobs spent a lot of her early life overwhelmingly surrounded by Hammondses.
