"Alice and at least two of her daughters emigrated to New England. She was living in Roxbury, Massachusetts, by 2 April 1640, when a complaint was drawn up against 'Alice Tompson widdow.'" [Randy A. West, citation details below.]

Notes:

No documentation absolutely proves that the Mary Tompson who married Joseph Wise was the Mary Tompson who was baptized in 1619 to John Tompson and Alice Freeman. But a large amount of evidence suggests that this is probably the case.*

Arguing that the two individuals were the same, Mary Lovering Holman (in Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife Frances Helen Miller, Concord, New Hampshire: The Rumford Press, 1948) pointed out that, (1), when "Mary Tompsonn" married Joseph Wise in Roxbury in 1641, there was no Tompson family in Roxbury save for that of Alice (Freeman) Tompson; (2) in the course of their marriage, Mary frequently joined her husband Joseph in the sale of property, and only on one occasion signed in release of dower rights, a believable pattern of behavior if Mary was in fact from a gentry family; (3) Mary and Joseph named their seventh child Henry, "an unusual name at the time but that of Alice Freeman's father, brother, and great-grandfather, while the name of Katherine, the ninth child, also appears in the Freeman family"; and (4) if Mary the wife of Joseph Wise was in fact the Mary Tompson born to John Tompson and Alice Freeman in 1619, then she would have been 22 at her marriage, an entirely plausible age.

In 1980, 32 years later, Robert Charles Anderson wrote: "Joseph [Wise] is next seen marrying in Roxbury on 3 Dec. 1641 'Mary Tompsonn.' There is good reason to believe that this is the Mary Tompson baptized at Preston Capes, Northants, 14 Nov. 1619, to John and Alice (Freeman) Tompson (TAG 13: 1-8; 14:145 f.). Arguments for this identification of Joseph's wife are given by Mary Holman (Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife Frances Helen Miller, pp. 422 f.), with support from Donald Lines Jacobus (TAG 32:128). Further supporting circumstantial evidence lies in the Rhode Island land records, where we find that on 7 June 1671 Joseph Wise of Roxbury sells to Deacon William Parke of Roxbury half of a 600 acre tract in Providence. After the document was drawn up, it was discovered that an error in the bounds had to be corrected. This correction was made and signed by Joseph Wise Senior and by Samiel Williams 'for his father Deacon William Park.' William Parke was son of Robert Parke of Roxbury by his first wife, and was therefore stepbrother of Mary Tompson, daughter of John and Alice (Freeman) Tompson. Samuel Williams, who had married Theoda Parke, daughter of William, was brother of Stephen Williams who had married Sarah, daughter of Joseph Wise. Two years later Joseph Wise sold the other half of this tract to Caleb Lamb and Stephen Williams (Rhode Island Land Evidences vol. 1, 1648-1696, pp. 40 f., 81.). Lawyer and politician. He was a representative of the town of New Haven in the State Legislature for seven or eight sessions, most of them during the war of 1812. The institution that eventually became Yale Law School began with him training legal apprentices in his law office in New Haven in the first decade of the 19th century.

"After completing his studies at Yale [Seth Perkins Staples] began the study of the law in the office of the Hon. David Daggett in New Haven, Connecticut for two years. During this time Seth hand-copied a set of Tapping Reeve's law notes for his own use, but never attended the Litchfield Law School as a student (a common misconception). Once his understanding of the law was adequate. Seth passed the bar in Litchfield in 1799, and then immediately opened a law office of his own in New Haven and commenced practice. In that same year he married Catharine Wales Staples. During their marriage the couple had six children; three sons and three daughters, one daughter of which later attended the Litchfield Female Academy. The future Yale Law School formed in the New Haven law office of Seth P. Staples. Staples owned an exceptional library (an attraction for students at a time when law books were scarce), and he began training apprentices in the early 1800s. By the 1810s his law office had a full-fledged law school. Samuel Hitchcock, one of Staples' former students, became a partner at the office and later, the proprietor of the New Haven Law School." 1836. William Sisson CHAMPLIN (Mercy SISSON, William, William, Thomas, George, Richard) was born 16 Apr 1794 in Shelburne, Vermont. He died 29 Jan 1861 in Lehi, Utah, Utah.

William Sisson Champlin and his family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830's and migrated to Missouri. He was the son of Joseph Champlin of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Mercy Sisson of Stonington, CT.

The Sissons settled in Independence, Missouri, and were driven out of that area along with the other Mormons. They subsequently located themselves in Clay County Missouri until the Mormons were driven out of there, and then located in Caldwell County, Missouri. Caldwell County was set up at that time by the government, as a county specifically for the Mormons to live in, in order to avoid further conflicts. However, there were some of the old settlers who remained in the county, and they were not happy to have the Mormons as neighbors. You see, Missouri was a slave state, and the Mormons were opposed to slavery. So the aim of the old settlers was to expel the Mormons from the state to ensure the state remained pro-slavery.

William Sisson and his family lived at a place called Haun's Mill. It was a Mormon settlement, but not a very large one. The largest Mormon settlement in Caldwell County was Far West which had about 5,000 residents. The Mormons were aware of the rising hostilities against them, and as a result, the Prophet Joseph Smith counseled those at Haun's Mill to come to Far West for safety. It was October 30th, 1838. William and his family were concerned about having food to last them through the winter at Far West, and so in preparation to go there, they were digging up carrots that day. As they did so, the mob rode in on horseback, and a massacre ensued. A couple of days after the massacre, the Governor of Missouri, Governor Boggs, issued his famous "extermination order" which resulted in the Mormons fleeing to Illinois for safety. The extermination order called for the Mormons to be driven from the state, or exterminated if necessary. (After Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois, Brigham Young took the reins of leadership of the church, and in 1847, the Mormons began their famous pioneer trek to Salt Lake City, an area which was not desirable to others, in hopes that at last they would be able to live in peace.)

When the mob arrived at Haun's Mill, the women and children fled into the woods for safety, and the men ran into the blacksmith shop, and attempted to defend the settlement from that position. The blacksmith shop, however, was made of hewn logs, and there were cracks (the crack width being about 2") between the logs. The Mob came right up to the blacksmith shop and poked the barrels of their rifles through those cracks and opened fire on those inside. William Sisson Champlin was inside. And when the massacre was over, there were only two survivors from inside the blacksmith shop.

William was a smart man. When he saw what was happening, he laid down on the floor, and as his comrades fell to the ground, dead, he pulled their bodies over the top of his own, and pretended he was dead. When the mob rushed into the blacksmith shop after opening fire, they saw that William had new boots on his feet, and they wanted those boots. He allowed them to take the boots, all the while pretending he was dead, and as a result, he lived, and for the rest of his days, he was known as "Old Possum". His wife and children who had fled into the woods also survived.
