  ODNB (citation details below) calls her "perhaps a niece of Roger Martival, bishop of Salisbury, and a member of the family of the lords of Noseley, a few miles north-east of Saddington." Nichols (citation details below) shows her as a daughter of Sir Anketin de Martival, lord of Noseley, died 1278, son of another Anketin de Martival, lord of Noseley 1250, high-sheriff 1258, and his wife Agnes. Nichols shows Roger Martival, bishop of "Sarum" (i.e. Salisbury) as Joyce's brother, rather than her uncle, and her as his heir in 1329.
