- Born about 1624 (census 1666) or 1619 (burial 1689). He was a sawyer. His 1651 grant of land in what became Montréal appears to have included portions of the Place d'Armes and of the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, site of the 2009 World Science Fiction Convention.
From his Wikitree page, citing a Rootsweb page that appears to no longer exist:
Urbain Tessier received a land grant in Montreal January 10, 1648, from M. de Maisonneuve. He was also one of the first five colonists to have a child baptized in Montreal. He also received a later grant. The following inscription is found sculptured into a building block of the facade of The Royal Trust Company, Rue St-Jacques in Montreal, Canada: THIS BUILDING IS ERECTED ON PART OF THE ORIGINAL CONCESSION TO URBAIN TESSIER DIT LAVIGNE BEING THE 8th GRANT MADE TO AN INDIVIDUAL IN THE ISLAND OF MONTREAL. Urbain Tessier was taken prisoner by the Iroquois March 24, 1661, along with others, and for some time the family did not know if he was alive or dead. Some of these prisoners were tortured and killed; Urbain Tessier lost a finger. He was finally liberated, through negotiations, along with the other last eight prisoners, by Père Simon Lemoine on August 31, 1661.
