My favorite trailer of the year so far was the one for The Last Samurai. Very cool and atmospheric, and other than a general sense of honor and adventure in Japan, I have no idea what it's about. Works for me.

Keith: Tom Sawyer was added because the studio insisted on one of the Gentlemen being an American. There are certainly American Victorian pulp characters who could have been used (I was part of a long discussion thereabout) but few of them would have instant name recognition -- Nick Carter? Frank Reade, Jr.? Similarly, I believe Quatermain was replaced because it was assumed we provinicials wouldn't know who he was. (I don't necessarily object to this -- he seems the one least likely to translate well to a Big Action Blow Zeppelins Up Movie, which looks like what we're going to get.

John, Quatermain's in the movie (that's the Sean Connery character). Big change is he's in charge instead of Mina Harker, who keeps her maiden name but gets to be a vampire (which makes a certain amount of sense: would you want a vampire in charge?). But oh, it's that and a thousand other likely twitches, fudges, and "improvements" that'll make it something barely recognizable from the original. With luck it will still be entertaining.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! -- comment #22 from Kip W

I'm not sure I think the loss incurred in not being able to read comics is offset by not being disappointed in a possibly mediocre adaptation.

Analogies come to mind: never eating homemade chicken so I won't be upset at what McDonald's does to their nuggets. Never seeing Mr. Deeds Goes to Town so I don't mind what Adam Sandler did to it. Mind you, I never rode on the original "Pirates of the Caribbean," so I'll be able to view the movie without expecting my seat to move.

I'm glad for previews that hand me the whole plot of the movie and all the best special effects on a platter. That way I don't have to see nearly as many movies. Heck, since they show at least 8 previews with every movie, it's like paying only $1 per movie!
