Good for LJS to give out free shrimp, although giving it out on a Monday, between 2 and 5 pm does limit their free shrimp cost liability to a considerable degree, does it not.

(Well, the really sad bit: The plot where they built the place is on the edge of a wetlands area. A few months back, I took a break from my after-work walk to watch a medium-large bird of prey -- brown with tan speckles -- futzing around in the same spot. So, instead of a place where eagles chew on mice, it'll be a place for suburboids to chew on hush puppies.)

It was pretty tasty, too. I don't know that I'd want a whole meal of them, but I think they'd be great as an add-on, which appears to be how they're primarily pushing them.

I recall seeing at least one advertising flyer in my local (Knoxville, TN) newspaper, and it's been on the marquee of the Maryville/Alcoa LJS for about a week. I admit that's not a *lot* of advertising, but they're not completely hiding it, at least in my area.

KK Update: A sign appeared today on the doors saying "Opening in 9 days".
My current cunning plan is to sample one of each type over a few weeks just to get the UDTT over.
Is this likely to be possible? There are rumours they only sell in 1/2 dozens or more. Maybe I could take a bunch into work to share around, that way I'd only be able to get one.

In the US, you can buy KKs individually at the actual KK stores, but you'll see them in other retail outlets usually in dozens.

I will certainly say that a freshly-made KK donut is the ne plus ultra of yeast-raised glazed donuts. That said, there are lots of things more interesting to eat than even the best glazed donut in the world -- given a choice between mediocre chocolate mousse and the best glazed donut in the world, I go with the mousse.

OTOH, one of my nicest food memories is on my only foreign trip, staying overnight in an obscure corner of Rome in a huge impersonal tourist hotel. Chris & I found the local tennis club just behind it had a small restaurant where we tucked into good local pasta, salads & the best chocolate mousse either of us has ever had. Also good espresso. (memories...)

A large group of mousse (I'm from Michigan) I should think would be called a herd. But what do I know? I've never seen a large group of them, even in Spring. (I have seen a small family grouping in my mother's refrigerator.)

We have a Dunkin Donuts just up the road from me, and I do like their maple walnut scones.

My favorite thing of that type, though, is the maple bar and you really don't see those much anymore. My mother normally didn't let us eat sweet things like that, but whenever we took one of the Washington State ferries somewhere, my brother and I could each have a maple bar.

That's why I specified that the mousse should be "mediocre" rather than "nasty".

Coincidentally (or dentally carious ) the film "Super-size Me" opened this week. It's about a man who tried living on Macdonald's meals for a month. He's been here for the opening & has slimmed down nicely <Sob. How do they do it!?>.

Next, the big D-Day 60th anniversary on 6/6 -- one of those dates we can agree on how to write :) -- next Sunday. Wonder if there'll be special screenings of The Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan, etc? I suspect there'll be some political sniping about. The shrimp fed well that day.
AFAIK, virtually all the Australians involved in that first push were flyers with the RAF. There may have been some serving in the RN as well, but all the survivors I've heard of who are going over for the commemorations were airmen. Of course Nancy Wake was leading part of the Resistance who were chipping away at the Germans from behind.

After the game I showed them the Negro Leagues Museum, stopped by the house (we have a cat that needs a daily pill) and cruised through the Country Club Plaza before heading back to the convention at the Airport Hilton.

We also got to go to the hotel's storm shelter Saturday evening, tornados touched down about 10 miles north of the hotel site.

Waited until the huge queues died down, then went & sampled varieties by getting assortment & sharing (like a Chinese restaurant). With eyes closed it's hard to tell the difference except for the ones filled with different flavoured goop. The sugar or icing really overpowers the flavour, so we could only manage a mouthful of each. Happy now that we've tried them & haven't developed a craving.

BTW, if you've tried to look at the pictures & been rudely rebuffed, I'll have to get to work on a "gallery" that's properly viewable. I do want to put more of my images online. (Now well over 10,000 digital images taken since I got my digicam in October 2002, so winnowing is tricky.)
