Being the backward sort, I always read Jon Carroll's column in the Datebook section of the Chronicle first, then work my way backward into the news sections of the paper, arriving in the front section sometime around my second cup of coffee. Imagine my delight, as I blearily made school lunches this morning, to find Making Light there. Very cool.

I was pleasantly surprised when I read Carroll's column this morning. But not THAT surprised. When the subject of his column is book recommendations, it's not unusual for an SF writer to actually make it. No snooty reader he.

Congrats!

Cool. Not being in SF, I save up a week or two's worth of columns and then binge on Jon Carroll on their website.

Thank you, Mr. Carroll. Your humanity, humor, and philosophy have made the last eight years since I found your column just a bit more tolerable.

Another very good sfgate link is today's Katrina-related fiore cartoon: http://sfgate.com/comics/fiore
Warning: might make you cry. It did me.
