And speaking of "only in San Francisco" events, an ostrich got loose on the Golden Gate bridge during rush hour one day last week. I am not making this up: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/08/30/BAGDTEFAGN1.DTL&hw=ostrich&sn=001&sc=1000

It's called "sovereign immunity", Lisa.

The government has, by statute, agreed to be sued under certain circumstances. Not being a lawyer, I can only express my dark suspicion that this isn't one of them; I don't really know.

Excellent piece, and thanks for the link.

Stored rant on another evil rhyme: "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." This seems to completely immunize people from considering the possibility that the criminal justice system is fairly corrupt/incompetent and is apt to convict innocent people, and it absolves them from thinking about whether sentences and prison conditions are reasonable.
