Nice baby, nice baby…
Posted by Teresa at 06:09 PM *

Kip, Cathy, your new daughter is beautiful—but I hope you’re clear on the fact that that child is going to try to take over the world, once she gets to be a little older.

Not only take over the world, mind you. As Jerry Seinfeld noted of newborns after the birth of his daughter: "Make no mistake about it- they're here to replace us".

So I've been spending a lot more time in the world of kiddy lit these days and I've got a great new idea for yet another extension of the mighty Tor name--Tor for Tots. Can't you see it now? Ender's Game in a board book.

She is the best baby, and I thank everyone who's admired her. She's probably make her fannish debut at Capclave, if Mommy and Daddy don't spend too much money in London.

Yessir, that's my baby! She's only evil when people get in her way. Most of the time, she's just a totally sweet little infink. In fact, we weren't even having such a great time in Hong Kong, but that picture makes it all worth while.

Everywhere we went with her, people had to come up and talk to her. In China, there are platoons of women who roam the streets looking for infants so they can adjust their clothing. Naturally, Sarah gave them lots to do, as she strove mostly to remove her clothes. We ate in a Japanese restaurant at the China Hotel, and three of the servers (and the manager) kept coming back to feed her Cheerios, hold her, and (you got it) adjust her clothes.

Anyway, the plan here is to put up a web page about the trip and put up some pictures. Wish me luck and time. Especially time.

You can't fool me. That's a moppet Metron -- who is, I'm sure, a totally sweet little infink, not to mention astoundingly cute. Still, this "She's only evil when people get in her way" business is just not all that reassuring.

"When I become an Evil Overlord, I will...

"...start young.

"...act like a cute little infink -- as long as no one gets in my way.

"...be so cute that no one will suspect a thing until it's Way Too Late. Bwahahahah!"

Anyone know how "Xihuan" is pronounced?

I always suspected that Kuin was (is? will be?) female. The blatant phallicism of the chronoliths obviously was (is? will be?) meant to throw us off Her trail.

She's a doll-baby, tho. There's no denying it. Turns one's head nigh on to copper.

...and a monocle. I have done something about the missing trappings.

View here.

I promise, I will raise my children to be good worker drones.

But seriously, an adorable child. Congratulations :)

Michael, "Xihuan" is (probably) not unlike shee-hwan. Maybe. No idea about the tone.

I think the world would be a far better place if it were taken over by Cathy & Kip's daughter.

Oh...how cute! In the little yellow bunny dress! Heehee!
Okay. I'm done being sappy now. Ahem.

It's great that you two adopted a child from China--I have friends who did the same and say they're so glad they did, every day.

Yes, that's how you'd say it, with a dipping tone on the first syllable and a flat tone on the second. The common meaning is "to like", but as an adjective it means happy, or delightful.

That picture is priceless. :)

Kip and Cathy, she really is adorable!

#17 ::: Kip W ::: (view all by) ::: May 06, 2003, 08:15 PM:

Yep, she's one adorable kid. She's now getting where she can walk with just one hand supported. And she will sometimes do "fierce" upon request. As to her name, the notes by Damien and Erin seem spot-on to me.

On a related note, the ducks in the pond here actually produced some cheebees. I saw eleven ducklings out with their momma a couple of days ago, and as of today there are still nine of them -- the most optimistic creatures on this earth, bless their little mask faces and wobbly hopping legs.

That is one determined baby. We must keep her and Rebecca apart.

(Confidential to Teresa: Juliana turned 13 last week. As she put it, "Mom, I'm a teenager. Your life is over." I don't doubt she's right.)
