We were down from mid-afternoon yesterday until sometime last night. The server on which nielsenhayden.com is hosted suffered some kind of drastic hardware failure. Our provider has now migrated us to a new machine and everything should work as well (or poorly) as before.
It also looks like some of the comments posted yesterday have vanished into the aether. A couple of comments I posted, and some responses to them, are no longer there.
I've been redacted! The tragedy! The Unspeakable Tragedy! [swoons]
Yep, my nice Mr. Gradgrind quote has vanished.
In my line of work a lengthy discussion of RTO (Recovery Time Objective) vs. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) would ensue, boring the hell out of everyone.
The short version is, server dies, you always lose some data. How much is a function of how much money is spent on data protection. Sigh.
Yesterday must have been Server Problem Day. I had issues as well, while trying to migrate my archives from Blogger to Wordpress. Kept getting "Broken Pipe" error messages. For a while, I was concerned that my archives where spilling over into Blogger's basement, where some surly Janitor would have to mop them up.
Hmm. Yes, I think a few places had problems. Gmail and my other US (assumed) mail server were both inaccessible for most of the day.
This lands as good news for me.
I thought my IP had been banned.
;)
Did a few Particles also get zotched in the shut down? I might have dreamt the link to the user FAQ for chips, but I wouldn't like to think so.
The Chips FAQ is at:

I read the errors as denial of service on the DNS because the effect was very much intermittent though I might have better interpreted the shortage of new comments.
Those kind of technical problems would never happen if you used blogger! Er, hold on a second...
No current Open Thread so I'll post this here.

Ah, that explains it . . .
I fished a laptop out of a dumpster last week, polished up and reinstalled Windows, and brought it back East to give to my folks. One of the sites I've been trying to reach has been Making Light and not being able to find it made me wonder if I had mis-entered a DNS setting.
