comment from Bob on 11.Jan.07

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN, GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.
This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France , or maybe China

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded, and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers, and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin"
Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget. To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic. God bless America. Thank you and good night. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

Abi, that or reading some very strange reports.

Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come.
Wishful thinking.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.
It might be an improvement if we were, instead of watching our leaders growing fat on corruption. (See 'Halliburton', 'KBR', 'Enron', and 'Abramoff', and note that they're all good buddies of Bush, Rove, and Cheney.)

Serge, I think that's a little excessive. There are valid, coherent worldviews in the right wing, for instance those that advocate a small and minimally interfering government. That's a political choice (with its own upsides and downsides), not a rejection of sanity.

I don't share it, but I don't consider people who do nutbars.
He would have been standing up for what America is supposed to stand for. As for insulting people into the ground... Since 9/11, their side has been calling us degenerates, traitors, and advocating the assassination of those holding the views that are dear to us. I'm not feeling particularly generous. Still, when my father-in-law started talking politics during Xmas, and agreeing that Bush is an idiot, and that we should never have gone to war in Iraq, and that the war's architects are incompetents, I did not say "I told you so." All this being said, I do hope I will have the moral fiber that I currently require from the reasonable Republicans if ever my side goes off the deep end. I don't see us going off that deep end. Still, I hope I'd do what I expect from others.

In today's polarised political climate, I could see where a Republican might avoid taking a stand against torture specifically to avoid any donkey-lover accusations.

So if "they" (for any value of "they" you choose) have been behaving like spoiled five year olds (and I put all namecalling in that class), does that make it OK for us to throw ourselves on the ground and howl?

Why does everyone want me to be angry all the time? It really hacks me off sometimes. (joke)

Thats... wow. It makes sense that an isolationist rant would be blindly americo-centric (is that a word?) but you have to have such a short memory that you forget the word "Afghanistan". Where the NATO ISAF* right now has French, German, Canadian and many other nations' troops.

I'll resist saying anything about the advisability of severing diplomatic relations. No I will. No, really.

Hope it works out.

A friend of mine was having very great work difficulties caused by co-workers who wanted to "get the fat fag fired." He works for a financial services company where any employee / department can have a surveillance camera on at any time, it's a matter-of-fact part of being employed there.

Fellow employees were so mean about him that management decided to turn on the cameras in his department/around his workstation.

Result: My friend was always doing his job (and he ain't fat anymore, thanks to Weight Watchers and continuning vigilance, he is quite buff-looking). And his coworkers whose complaints about him had caused the surveillance, including his supervisor, were video taped screwing off. And they have been having manditory overtime. Makes the bad folks look especially foolish....

My nominee for most amusing misstatement in the post: foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

From what I've heard, this is somewhere between a common delusion and a common lie. Actual grants -- money that we don't expect to come back out the way it went in -- is certainly under $100 billion/yr (today's quote of what the Pentagon is asking for Iraq next year), and IIRC closer to $10 billion -- and most of that is not freely spendable, but is supposed to be used to buy US products, so cutting foreign would do more to slow our economy down than to save money.

abi: I like it.

The whole Bob post strikes me as coming from that innocent state in which you still believe that your parents are all-powerful and all-knowing.

It's a terrible moment in childhood when you find out that this isn't true - when you find in adolescence that, instead of your father pulling his squash game to give you a chance, you're pulling yours for his sake; or when, as a child, you run up against the limits of your parents' knowledge of science, and find you can go beyond them. It's part of growing up, but it also leaves you (or at any rate it left me) with the queasy sense of "who the hell is running this ship, then? Ordinary people? Like me?"

The only other moment that comes close to it is when you realise for the first time that, to your pupils, or the trainees you're in charge of, or the recruits you're instructing, or even your own kids, you are now The Wise Old Man. And they're expecting you to know it all, because you aren't at the bottom of the chain now - you're at the top.

To quote my favourite tag again: "Nescio, me fili, quo parvo sapientia mundus regnatur". Little do you know, O my son, with what a small store of wisdom the world is governed.

Bob, and the other Bobs, haven't really hit that stage yet - to them Father is still all-powerful, superhuman, and omniscient. He hasn't worked out that they call him Uncle Sam because he isn't your father or your mother.

But it would be even worse if I realised my pupils regarded me as The Wise Old Woman. "My Lord, they're even duller and less observant than I thought!"

Looking at Bob's comment, I can't help thinking that whoever wrote this feels that the rest the world needs America more than than America needs the rest of the world. This may be true, but that doesn't mean America doesn't need the rest of the world.

Earliest copy of Bob's message that I can find easily is from 2 April 2003, a few weeks after the U.S. and allies invaded Iraq. It appears to be attributed to "Earl Roe, SGM, USA (RET) in Michigan," but possibly Sergeant Major Roe merely passed the essay along. One wonders if it is this Earl Roe.

There are 200 hits in Google Groups and 716 hits in a Google search of the Web for the short phrase I searched on.

Like I said, it's a financial services company (one of the nation's largest), they handle payrolls, and a wide range of other such things. They let employees know up front that cameras can be on without the employees knowing.

And Aconite, they were just being abusive and attributing weight to being lazy. Which is stupid. Just like saying "any attribute" = lazy.

I shudder to think of how much higher the death toll would have been if the fine folks at Gander International Airport hadn't said "What's that? Dozens of potential flying bombs that the United States can't possibly allow into their airspace because any of them could be full of suicidal terrorists just waiting to turn whatever civilian targets they can into piles of rubble punctuated by jet-fuel fires? Of course we'll let them land here! Plenty of room. We'll just have Molly run to the Sobeys for some more tea."
